In its October 2016 issue, the American Bar Association Journal published “Powerful Eloquence: Celebrating the Words of Justice Robert H. Jackson,” an article by Bryan A. Garner, president of LawProse Inc. In the recently posted online version of the attached article, Mr. Garner notes that, “because Jackson was so unusually eloquent, a majority of the current justices name him as their favorite writer ever to serve on the court.” While the article focuses on Jackson’s majority opinion in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, and his opening and closing arguments at Nuremberg, Jackson left behind a treasure trove of quotable lines that reach the essence of timeless legal truths. The Robert H. Jackson Center continues to build on Justice Jackson’s enduring insights through our mission “to advance public awareness and appreciation of the principles of justice and the rule of law as embodied in the achievements and legacy of Robert H. Jackson.”
Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson enjoyed a distinguished career as former Solicitor General, Attorney General and Chief U.S. prosecutor at the Nuremberg trial against leaders of the Third Reich in 1945. Throughout this period, however, it was his gift as an eloquent writer that distinguished him amongst his contemporaries and colleagues. And this appreciation for his powerful articulacy continues to the present.
